Segovia proclaims Isabel “successfully”

Tens of thousands of people walked through Plaza Mayor, Plaza de San Martín, Calle Real and Paseo del Salón de Segovia this weekend, where the Aqueduct gave greater importance to these other spaces that made at the time the scene of various events commemorating the coronation of Isabella I of Castile in the city 550 years ago.

The streets of the historic site as well as the places chosen to carry out different activities were thus a meeting point for Segovians and tourists in an event that the Town Hall describes as “successful”, which underlines in a press release “the direct impact on the hotel and hospitality companies”, which have affixed the “complete” sign, as well as the entire chain of supplies and services that accompanies it.

“The full capacity of the busy streets of Segovia was also evident on the Paseo de los Mercaderes, where there were 65,000 participants,” they point out. This space hosted this commercial activity for three days during which there were 10 merchant stands offering strictly local products.

Meanwhile, the central event, in which Queen Isabella was played by the actress María de Castro, traveled the streets from the Alcazar through Juan II and the arch of Socorro (of San Andrés) and Barrionuevo until ‘at the Plaza Mayor, with “a very large audience”. The reenactment organized on the sidewalk of the Cathedral also recorded full capacity in its stands, with more than 715 seats, tickets having been sold in the first week of going on sale. And the medieval jousts, organized in San Marcos, brought together more than a thousand people during the morning parades and as many during the afternoon parades.

On the other hand, the security devices “functioned perfectly, without any notable incident being recorded”, underlines the Town Hall. Firefighters from the local police and civil protection were part of this system, which also benefited from the support of the national police in security tasks.

With these activities, the Segovia City Council exalted the figure of Queen Isabel I, “one of the most important in the history of the city, who was thus the protagonist of a crucial moment in history.” To this end, the most significant events were recreated in a strictly historical manner, while a multitude of theatrical actions were also carried out in order to situate the city in medieval times. These historic remembrances will continue throughout the year and culminate in December, coinciding with the exact date of the proclamation.
