On OCS, “Toutouyoutou Two,” a vintage fantasy, enjoys an unexpected second season

OCS – ON DEMAND – SERIES

In this world of dead seasons and brutal cancellations, the survival of toutoyoutouA vintage fantasy developed under the OCS Signature label, now owned by the Canal+ group, it is almost a miracle. The series, whose second season is currently being broadcast, is in fact one of those unlikely concepts that are held together by an original tone, the seduction of a small world reproduced at low cost, but with a certain wit – here, the orange-brown France of the 1980s… or even the charm of its artists.

In its first season, toutoyoutou Jane (Alexia Barlier), a statuesque American woman recently divorced, was propelled to Blagnac (Haute-Garonne), a suburb of Toulouse and the French capital of aeronautics. Jane, who came to extract some industrial secrets on behalf of the United States government, won the trust of the locals by organizing a tonic gymnastics class, around which a group of friends gathered. Unmasked at the end of the season, she prepares to return home, but the relationships she has established with the members of the gym will lead her to get involved in some additional missions.

While still very much a matter of espionage, with the Cold War and nuclear proliferation as a backdrop, this season “Two” particularly deepens its observation of Mitterrand’s France, galvanized by some industrial successes but reliant on social conformity. Individual trajectories blossom, including that of Jane, whom we discover a little more vulnerable, as if humanized by contact with her friends from Blagnac and her ex-husband, Tom (Janis Abrikh), who has arrived from the Atlantic to follow her activities, and also confides in her a painful secret.

Careful writing

Energized by the wind of freedom that Jane blows over Blagnac, her gymnastics students try, for their part, to take advantage of this strange time, which encourages women to empower themselves without necessarily giving them the means to do so, and above all, without involving men, who are very expensive here. Each trip speaks of an emancipation, from the father, the husband, the boss or even the lover.

The process can be tedious, but it is lightened by careful writing and, without completely renewing its formula, the series continues to line up good ideas: the television program that Naïma (Souad Arsane) wants to sell to a recently opened FR3 antenna, the break-hit recorded by Mapi (Sophie Cattani) to cure a broken heart… Not to mention the cracks of Karine (Claire Dumas, excellent), a former housewife who jogs with greasy hair and who became a secretary so as not to die of boredom, and whose jumping jacks and the butterfly kicks There are so many cries for help.
