The Israeli military is establishing a forward operating base near the UN peacekeeping mission on the border with southern Lebanon, the Associated Press reports, citing a UN official.
The base, located south of the UN-designated Blue Line and very close to the positions of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), puts peacekeepers at risk, the official said.
Meanwhile, the UNIFIL representative Andrea Tenenti told CNN that they were in danger due to firefights between the IDF and Hezbollah.
“Our position is between them and they have established a post not far from our base.” – Teneti pointed out.
Previously, UNIFIL, in a statement posted on the social network
“This is an extremely dangerous event. “It is unacceptable to jeopardize the security of UN peacekeepers carrying out the tasks assigned to them by the Security Council.” – the statement said.
The organization noted that the Israel Defense Forces “were repeatedly informed about the current situation through normal channels,” Interfax clarifies.
