Spain calls for release of hostages and ceasefire on anniversary of Hamas attack in Israel

The Spanish government has requested the release of hostages still held by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), as well as a ceasefire in the region that allows access to humanitarian aid in Gaza, all at the on the occasion of the first anniversary of the attacks against Israel on October 7, 2023.

In a statement, the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled and reiterated “his most categorical condemnation of the atrocities Hamas terrorist attacks of October 7, 2023″, also expressing solidarity with the relatives and friends of the victims, in particular Maya Villalobo and Iván Illaramendi, the two Spanish citizens murdered during the terrorist attacks.

“After a year, the government expresses solidarity with the relatives of the hostages still kidnapped and demands his immediate release. “A ceasefire is necessary, the release of hostages, access of humanitarian aid to civilians and an end to violence,” reads the letter published on the occasion of the first anniversary of the attacks.

In this sense, the Government reiterated its determination to fight against “anti-Semitism and all forms of hatred and discrimination”, while committing to “continue working for peace in the Middle East“and move forward in “the application of the two-state solution living together in peace and security, the best guarantee of stability for all in the region.”

The Israeli army launched an offensive against the Gaza Strip following the Hamas attack and other Palestinian militias on October 7, 2023, which left 1,200 dead and 240 hostages. Since then, approximately 41,870 people have died in the Gaza Strip, in addition to more than 750 Palestinians killed by the actions of the army or Israeli settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
