The mayor of Chilpancingo, capital of the state of Guerrero, in southern Mexico, was murdered, the governor, Evelyn Salgado, and an official from the opposition political alliance announced on Sunday, October 6.
The 43-year-old elected official, who took office six days ago, was decapitated and his head was left on the roof of a car, according to the photo of the macabre scene published several times on social networks.
“I strongly condemn the murder of the president of the Municipal Council of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos Catalán, confirmed by the State Attorney General’s Office”said Governor Salgado in X. “His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation”added the governor of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena, left) in power.
“They murdered our mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, and just three days ago the secretary of this same city council, Francisco Tapia. “They had been on the job for less than a week.”deplored the president of the PRI (opposition), Alejandro Moreno.
The two elected officials do not mention the beheading, something that several information sites such as the dayclose to power, or Reformvery critical of the current government.
Alejandro Arcos Catalán won the mayoralty of Chilpancingo (283,354 inhabitants in 2020 according to official figures) in the June 2 elections under the banner of the PRI-PRD-PAN opposition alliance. His murder comes five days after the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum, who will present her national security plan on Tuesday.
