Spain delays presentation of budgets in Brussels beyond October 15

The Government is delaying the presentation of the draft budget in Brussels beyond the October 15 deadline. This was confirmed on Monday by Economy Minister Carlos Body, who said the European Commission had asked member states not to present budgetary plans without measures. excludes a new budget extension.

“The European Commission has explained that it does not want projects budgets without measures”said the Minister of the Economy upon his arrival at the meeting of Eurozone Economy and Finance Ministers in Luxembourg. “In a normal environment where we would not have this project by October 15, we would have presented a budget plan without economic policy measures and that will not happen because the European Commission has requested that the plans be presented with economic policy measures.”

Body clarified that it is only when the draft budget is on the table that the budget plan will be sent to Brussels. Spain intends to present its structural budget plan to the European Commission by October 15. The deadline has been extended from the initially planned September 20, which was extended by the majority of member states. To date, only Denmark, Malta and Greece They presented the structural budget plan.

Regarding the details of this roadmap, Corps referred to the budgetary trajectory presented last July and which set a deficit target of 3% for this year, which would fall to 2.5% next year, which would help reduce the debt. This figure would fall to 2.2% in 2026 and 1.8% in 2027, Corpo recalled the forecasts.

Parliamentary arithmetic will be decisive for the Government to be able to execute next year’s budgets. “We will properly present the budgets, which will be associated with the presentation at European level of the budget plan,” he declared.

After letting the deadline for presenting the budgetary plan expire, the government now confirms the delay in sending its draft budget to the European Commission. The Government’s difficulty in concluding agreements will be decisive in this process. If Spain fails to prepare its accounts for next year, the the budget plan risks becoming a dead letter. The lack of credibility of a public accounts control plan for next year requires the support of a budget roadmap defined for the last time in 2022.
