Iberdrola begins the deployment of its renewable heat network in Palencia

Starting gun for Iberdrola’s first renewable heat network in Palenciawhere the company plans to invest almost 40 million euros in the deployment of a renewable heat distribution network to provide heating and hot water to homeowner communities, businesses and administrative buildings.

The mayor of Palencia, Miriam Andrés, accompanied by the delegate of Iberdrola in Castilla y León, Miguel Calvo and the project manager Javier Amores, visited this morning the construction sites of the 100% renewable origin factory.

The execution of this heat network, which benefits from a 50-year general concession from the City Hall, will take place over the next three years and will mainly cross the neighborhoods of Pan and Guindas, Centro, Allende el Río, el Carmen, San Juanillo, Avenida Madrid, San Pablo and Santa Marina, San Antonio, Santiago, Ave María and Cristo, Ical collection.

This way of obtaining hot water and heating, which presents greater energy and economic efficiency, and which will be operational in 2025, becomes a much cleaner, safer and more efficient alternative for users than those generated in gas or diesel and, moreover, it does not imply any investment for the end customer since the connection has no cost and they will only pay for the energy consumed. “These major projects are cooperative. This will improve the final situation of the citizens of Palencia, because they will have hot water and much more efficient heating and we will also turn off many boilers that pollute both gas and diesel,” said the delegate of Iberdrola Castile and León, Miguel Calvo.

The mayor of the capital, Miriam Andrés, applauded the fact that Palencia is the first capital in Spain to integrate this heating network. “In this way the city will have two heating networks and this will allow citizens to obtain benefits in terms of savings on their bills and also energy efficiency by reducing CO2 in the environment. Palencia is now in the lead and this is a fact that we should be congratulated on,” Andrés underlined.

Economy

Consumers of this heating network could save up to 20 percent on your bill energy, and savings can be guaranteed compared to the system it replaces by contract and leaving the old system as a backup. Likewise, with the implementation of this project, the emission of approximately 20,000 tons of CO2 per year will be avoided. The company benefits from the support of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, since the initiative was selected to receive a grant of 4.9 million euros from the Incentive Program for heat and cold network projects using renewable energy sources in a competitive competition. , as part of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan -funded by the European Union- NextGenerationEU.

This first heating network in Palencia will have a production plant of 100 percent renewable origin and will supply more than 5,000 homes through this pipeline system of approximately 20 kilometers which will constitute the supply/return network of the centralized installation which will connect the factory to the ancillary buildings and industries. In addition, the heating network will have a 10,000 cubic meter storage tank which will decouple production from heat demand. “The work, which has already been approved by the Town Hall, will begin at the end of October or the beginning of November,” explained the project manager, Javier Amores.

As for the other network already installed in Palencia, the Palencia councilor indicated that there are already functioning sections, such as those of Valladolid Avenue and the Argentine Republic. “These are two networks that will not overlap and will complement each other. “We cannot allow the reopening of roads that have been open for months,” he said.
