The doors that Antonio López made to replace those of the main entrance of the Burgos Cathedralthe cover of Santa María, will remain for the moment in the Temple Museum. These are two large bronze doors which, thanks to the contribution of a group of businessmen, were called upon to replace the current ones, made of wood and of great simplicity. The new design includes particularly controversial reliefssince they reproduced the author’s own images of the new doors, evoking the image of God, as well as that of his daughter and a grandson.
The controversy that arose during knowledge of the design reached UNESCO, which warned that changing the doors could lead to a revision of the cataloging of Burgos Cathedral. as a world heritage site.
The Metropolitan Chapter of the Cathedral asked the Junta de Castilla y León to specify the location of the “temporary exhibition” of said doors and received authorization for them to be installed in the Cathedral Museum.
However, the cathedral organ always intends to place the doors in the place for which they were designed, i.e. the facade of Santa María. In fact, he already anticipates that as soon as he receives them, he will begin the process to achieve this goal, requesting the appropriate authorizations to the competent administrations.
