The head of the IAEA condemned the attacks on the workers of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

Attacks on and threats against employees of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant are unacceptable, said Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

This is how the head of the agency commented on the message about the murder of a security worker at a power plant Andrei Korotky.

The IAEA established seven essential nuclear safety components in March 2022, the agency recalled.

“The third pillar states that “operational personnel must be able to carry out their security responsibilities and make decisions without undue pressure.” – says the message.

The attack on plant employees represents “a flagrant violation of this fundamental element of overall nuclear safety,” according to the statement. The security rationale is also contradicted by threats of retaliation in the area of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, which could affect workers at the plant, the IAEA added.

ZNPP employee Andrei Korotky died on October 4 in a car explosion. The car bomb exploded as he was getting into the car. Short died at the hospital from his injuries.

station director Yuri Chernichuk He described the murder as a terrorist attack. He expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased and promised to provide assistance to his family. Investigators opened a criminal case under paragraph “e” of Part 2 of Art. 105, part 1 art. 222.1 of the Penal Code “Murder by generally dangerous method”. The possible penalty is up to 20 years in prison, RBC clarifies.
