Hamas will rise “like the phoenix” despite losses suffered during a year-long war with Israel and is still recruiting new people into its ranks and producing weapons, said Khaled Meshaal, head of the movement’s overseas politburo.
“The history of Palestine is made up of cycles… We go through stages where we lose martyrs and we also lose some of our military potential, but then the Palestinian spirit will rise like a phoenix… We have lost some of our ammunition and weapons, but Hamas continues to recruit young people and continues to produce an important part of its ammunition and weapons.” – said Mashaal in an interview with Reuters.
He also noted that he sees no prospects for peace as long as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government is in power in Israel. According to Mashaal, as long as there is an “occupation” in the region, it will remain a “time bomb.”
