An earthquake occurred near New Zealand

An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 was recorded in the Pacific Ocean near New Zealand, reports the Altai-Sayan branch of the Unified Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

According to operational data from the Altai-Sayan branch, the epicenter of the earthquake recorded at 02:59 (Moscow time) on Tuesday was located 660 m northeast of the city of Tauranga on the North Island of New Zealand and 472 km south by Raoul. Island as part of the Kermadec archipelago.

Depending on the intensity of the shaking at the epicenter, the earthquake is considered “destructive.”

The Geological Survey estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 5.8. The origin of the earthquake, according to their data, was at a depth of 10 km.
