Georgian Prime Minister denounces interference by other countries in elections

Interference from third countries was reported during the parliamentary elections in Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said on the Georgian television channel Imedi.

“These elections witnessed unprecedented outside interference, including foreign money,” – TASS quotes him.

At the same time, according to the prime minister, Georgia will be able to “reset” its relations with the West at the beginning of 2025. He clarified that this should happen in the first quarter of next year.

On October 26, elections to the Parliament of Georgia were held. According to the Central Election Commission, the ruling Georgian Dream won the elections with 53.92% of the votes. The opposition, which did not recognize the electoral results, accuses this party of changing the course of European integration towards rapprochement with Russia. Moscow stated that it has neither the “right” nor the “desire” to interfere “in the internal affairs of Georgia.”

The European Union suspended Georgia’s admission process this summer. The reason for this decision was the approval of a law on foreign agents in the country. After this, the president of the country Salome Zurabishviliwho does not belong to the ruling party and also did not recognize the election results, announced plans to run for a second term to “return Georgia to the European path,” RBC recalls.
