dFor a year now, the Gaza Strip has been the subject of intense Israeli fighting and bombing, in retaliation for the massacres and kidnapping of numerous hostages by Hamas terrorist militias on October 7, 2023.
The press, however, still cannot enter this enclave. Access is prohibited by Israel. Therefore, it is impossible to see directly what is happening there. It is impossible for us to report on the massive destruction, tens of thousands of Palestinians dead and wounded, without relying on communication from each camp.
Palestinian journalists trapped in Gaza do not benefit from any protection. More than a hundred of them were killed, and several dozen of them were shown to have died in the course of their work. The correspondents of the press agencies, television and radio channels, the media interlocutors that we represent are, like the vast majority of Gazans and their families, displaced and their lives in danger. They are periodically subjected to numerous power and media outages, which prevent them from transmitting what they see and hear to the outside world.
This situation, which we already denounced a year ago, is unprecedented. It is up to the editorial team, as in any armed conflict, to measure the risks of sending or not sending their journalists to a war zone, as they do all over the world.
We repeat, misinformation and lies are also weapons of war of the different parties involved in the conflict. Preventing journalists from freely exercising their profession can only benefit them. This right to inform and be informed is the pillar of our democracies. This is a fundamental freedom, enshrined in article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We therefore call on the Israeli authorities to preserve the safety of journalists currently trying to work in Gaza and to open this territory to the international press so that it can do its job: report unhindered and witness the progress of this war. one of the deadliest and most violent of the early 21st centurymy century.
