The government will not withdraw the rule that allows the release of ETA members, according to the PSOE parliamentary group

The government will not withdraw legal reform that will allow some ETA prisoners to serve shorter sentences than originally planned, leading to their release. The standard is currently under review in the Senate, where the PSOE parliamentary group also refused to withdraw the amendment in disagreement.

The legislative error – for some – was discovered when it became known that on September 18, Congress unanimously approved the modification of Organic Law 7/2014, on the exchange of criminal records and the examination criminal resolutions in the European Union.

In the approval there was a Sumar amendment that allows prisoners sentenced in European Union countries, then in Spain, to add both sentences to the total number of years they must serve in prison. In other words, instead of serving two sentences in two different countries, the years will be counted in a unified way.

This reform will benefit several ETA terrorists, such as Francisco Javier García Gaztelu, alias Txapote.

Parties like the PP and Vox supported this reform in Congress without realizing its effects and it was only this Monday that they realized it, when it appeared in the press. The PP recognized its error, as said by its president, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who appealed to the conscience of the PSOE and the government to prevent it from moving forward.

In the Senate, where it is being examined, the deadline for submitting amendments has already passed and the PP has no room to prevent its approval. The only option is for the government to withdraw it or for the Office of the Senate Speaker to withdraw the amendment in question, which must be accepted unanimously.

None of these things will happen. The PSOE in the Senate has not agreed to withdraw the amendment, so there is no unanimity and the Executive is showing signs that the reform will continue.
