Le Pen saves Macron from debate in French National Assembly over left-wing motion to impeach him

The procedure for the impeachment of French President Emmanuel Macron, promoted by the left-wing party La France Insoumise (LFI), will not be debated in the plenary session of the National Assembly.

This Tuesday, the conference of presidents decided not to include it on the agenda, in particular the heads of the right-wing parliamentary groups and the Macronists and their centrist allies voted against, while the far-right National Rally by Marine Le Pen abstained. , according to parliamentary sources cited by French media.

The vote in favor of Le Pen could have changed the result of the vote, reports the EFE agency. “Emmanuel Macron will not have to undergo a debate in the hemicycle on [su] “Dangerous and erratic behavior” after the legislative elections, denounced MP Mathilde Panot to the press. As noted, all four left-wing groups have “come out in favor” of this debate in the House. “It was therefore Ms. Le Pen who, in a certain way, saved Mr. Macron from the impeachment procedure. »

France Insoumise, the party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, announced that it would present a new resolution.

This Tuesday’s decision puts an end to a procedure which had no real chance of succeeding, given the balance of power in Parliament. He would have had to gather the favor of two thirds of parliamentarians, which would require Marine Le Pen’s far right to unite with the entire left, which had already announced from the start that it would not support this which he describes as “a maneuver” to distract the “extreme left”.

The attempt to impeach Macron was already rejected last week by the legislative committee of the National Assembly, where a total of 54 deputies voted for abandoning it, while 15 voted for maintaining it.

Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s party justified this motion by the president’s refusal to appoint Lucie Castets, candidate of the progressive coalition New Popular Front (NFP), to the post of Prime Minister. The French head of state chose to appoint as Prime Minister the conservative Michel Barnier, of the Republicans, a party which obtained 47 deputies out of the 577 in the National Assembly, instead of Castets, as proposed by the 193 of the NFP , first block in the room.

The initiative was presented by all LFI deputies and certain communists and ecologists, but not the socialists. It passed the first parliamentary filter on September 17 at the table of the National Assembly, thanks to the majority available to the left in this case.

In the meantime, this Tuesday, Barnier is preparing to face the first motion of censure against his government, presented by the New Popular Front. However, it shows no signs of prosperity either since Le Pen’s far right has also announced its vote against.
