Four in ten young Spaniards suffer from mental health problems, according to a report from the University of Seville

41 percent of Spanish adolescents, or four in ten, say they have had a mental health problem or think they have suffered from one. This is the main conclusion of the Opinion Barometer of Children and Adolescents 2023-2024 which is prepared jointly by the University of Seville and Unicef.

The director of the study, Pilar Ramosbelieves that “there is an urgent need to break the stigma as a society and normalize asking for help.” He further highlights the importance of intervening in educational centers, because young people “think that they will not be kept secret, that counselors are not sufficiently trained or that they do not have time to take care of them.”

For his part, Jose Maria Veraexecutive director of UNICEF, stressed that it is “essential to promote actions, campaigns, initiatives or training in all areas that contribute to the eradication of stigma and prejudice.”
