The left has drawn a line between supporters and opponents of the government. On Tuesday, October 8, the motion of censure that he defended against Barnier’s government – the first – only obtained 197 votes. Far from the 289 needed to take it down. Only five votes were added to the 192 from the four groups of the New Popular Front (NFP): four votes from the Freedom, Independents, Overseas and Territories (LIOT) group and one unregistered (David Taupiac, elected by several leftists from the Gers). Within the NFP, only the New Caledonian separatist Emmanuel Tjibaou did not support censorship.
As expected, the left initially defended censorship against a government that chose not to seek the confidence of the National Assembly. And that she simply considers illegitimate: “Never, Mr Prime Minister, you should have appeared before me and sat on these benches with a government, which should never have been appointed either”launched in the introduction by the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure, who points out that it is “It is fashionable to act” as if “the liberal and conservative right have won the legislative elections”.
Sensing clear cuts in social policies in the budget to be presented on Thursday, Olivier Faure does not believe that the announced tax increases are carried out in a spirit of fiscal justice: “Mr Prime Minister, you said you wanted to “do a lot with a little, starting from almost nothing.” In reality, we want to do a lot with people who have little and almost nothing with those who have everything. »
The “less relative” majority
In front of the deputies, Michel Barnier clarified some points of his general policy statement delivered a week earlier. And he responded to the two main demands raised by the left. About illegitimacy: “Among the relative majorities, what I see is that the relative majority that accompanies the government is today the least relative. » About the budget: “The reality that we have to tell the French is that we are spending too much, we are spending money that we do not have. And that we borrow at rates that are now moving away from those of our European neighbors. »
Although the National Group (RN) had announced in advance that it would not vote in favor of censure, the speech of its deputies was the most anticipated. How was the extreme right group, which declared itself the opposition, going to justify the survival of “the continuation of macronism by other means”in the words of its rapporteur, Guillaume Bigot? The deputy for the Territory of Belfort himself described all the political and strategic elasticity of the RN: “I will explain to you why our group is eager to vote in favor of censure, why it will have no qualms about voting in favor tomorrow, but also why it will not vote in favor today. »
