Khamenei called for preparations for an attack on Israel – NYT

Iran is preparing for a possible attack on Israel and both sides are increasingly prepared for a possible escalation.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has asked the country’s Supreme National Security Council to develop plans for an attack on Israel, The New York Times reports. Commanders are already drawing up target lists and, according to three senior Iranian officials, the attack could come after the US presidential election.

Iranian officials, including General Ali Fadavi, deputy head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, said a response to “Zionist aggression” would be inevitable. The general also warned that Iran, if attacked, could “destroy everything Israel has” with a single massive response. The Supreme Leader’s chief of staff, Ghulamhossein Mohammadi Golpayegani, added that Iran intends to provide a “severe response” to recent Israeli attacks on Iranian military targets.

Axios reports that a possible attack could be carried out from Iraq using drones and ballistic missiles. Such a scenario, according to sources, will make Israel’s response difficult, since the attacks will not be carried out from Iran’s own territory, but from Iraqi bases.

US President Joe Biden has already expressed concern about a possible escalation and sent a message to Tehran. Biden warned that any retaliatory action against Israel in the coming days could be perceived as an attempt to interfere in the US presidential election.

Israel, in turn, is at a high level of preparation for possible attacks, as CNN reports. The IDF continues to closely monitor decisions in Iran to determine possible attack dates or vectors.

In an interview with CNN, an Israeli military source noted that recent attacks on missile production facilities and air defense systems in Iran have left Tehran in a difficult position, weakening its defensive capabilities.

IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi confirmed that Israel would respond more forcefully than before if faced with Iranian attacks, retaliating against targets that had not previously been attacked.

Previously, Kursor wrote about whether Iran would attack Israel in the coming days.

Iran is considering launching an attack against Israel from Iraq.
