The Constitutional Court of Georgia did not suspend the law on foreign agents

The Constitutional Court of Georgia will not suspend the law “On transparency of foreign influence.” The decision was published on the court’s website on October 9.

The decision was supported by six judges of the Constitutional Court, two opposed.

The Constitutional Court of Georgia has partially accepted the complaints against this law and is proceeding to examine them on the merits. The court must determine whether the law on foreign agents contradicts the articles of the Constitution on the right to privacy of personal and family life, personal space and communication (article 15), on the right to freedom of opinion, information , media and Internet. (Article 17), on freedom of association (Article 22), on procedural rights (Article 31), on integration into European and Euro-Atlantic structures (Article 78).

As reported EADailyOn August 29, the Constitutional Court of Georgia began considering four lawsuits against the law on foreign agents. Georgia President’s Appeals Combined Into Single Lawsuit Salome Zurabishvilimore than a hundred non-governmental organizations, 38 opposition members of the Georgian parliament and two media organizations. The plaintiffs demand that the foreign agent law be stopped. Washington and Brussels demand the same from the Georgian authorities.

The term for consideration of a constitutional claim or constitutional submission should not exceed 9 months from the date of registration. In special cases, the term for consideration of the claim is extended, but not more than two months.
