Podemos presents to Congress the transfer of the remains of Moscardó and Milans del Bosch from the Alcázar of Toledo

Podemos asked the Spanish government a question at the Congress of Deputies to find out “when the government proposed the compliance with the law on democratic memory with regard to the Alcázar of Toledo“.

The purple formation maintains that it is appropriate to apply “article 38.3 of the aforementioned law, which establishes that the mortal remains of the leaders of the military coup of 1936 cannot be or remain buried in a prominent place of access to the public, other than a cemetery, which can favor the performance of public acts of exaltation, praise or commemoration of human rights violations during war or dictatorship”, according to Podemos itself in a press release.

In this sense, the party led by Ione Belarra affirms that “in the Alcazar of Toledo, a space dependent on the Ministry of Defense, the mortal remains of José Moscardó, leader of the rebel fascist faction, as well as other commanders such as Jaime Milans del Bosch“.

In addition, they recall that “in this complex, tributes were paid by fascist groups to Moscardó.”

For José Luis García Gascón, regional coordinator of Podemos“Castile-La Mancha has a historic debt to the victims of the Franco regime, because in more than 40 years the actions carried out by the Junta have been residual, even with setbacks like the recent text withdrawn by Culture which whitewashed the regime by Franco.

Furthermore, criticizes the government of Emiliano García-Page for “not seeing the need for a regional law on democratic memory”while the government’s commitment to human rights should be total, expanding and developing guarantees of reparation and non-repetition of the crimes of fascism.

He also recalls that “we can already promote in the region in 2019 a bill on democratic memory that the PSOE did not support”.

García Gascón believes that “Emiliano García-Page cannot continue to look away, because, in addition to the dissemination, protection and study of our democratic memory, it is essential to put an end to the revisionist and sectarian discourse of the right and far-right; “It is also essential to recognize all those people who gave their lives for democracy, rights and equality.”

Finally, he requests that “urgently and definitively, two years late in the entry into force of the law, all regional public administrations actively cooperate in the application of this standard of democratic memoryby removing all symbols or nomenclature in favor of the dictatorship and by identifying, exhuming and repairing all the victims who disappeared in Castile-La Mancha.”
