Sanctions against Ivanishvili and abolition of visa exemption: EP adopted resolution on Georgia

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Georgia on 9 October.

The general text of the resolution included an entry on personal sanctions against the founder of Georgian Dream. Bidzina Ivanishvili. In particular, members of the European Parliament condemn Ivanishvili’s personal role in “the current political crisis and another attempt to undermine the Euro-Atlantic orientation and turn the country towards Russia.”

The European Parliament once again called on the European Commission to promptly assess the impact of the law on foreign agents and the law against LGBT propaganda*the abolition of gender quotas and other legislative changes to ensure that Georgia meets the criteria for visa-free liberalization.

The European Parliament resolution has no legal force and is symbolic in nature. However, Georgian media point out that critical documents from the European Parliament have already created legal problems for ruling party founder and billionaire Ivanishvili: resolutions adopted in 2022 and 2023 were used by the Bermuda court in the case between Ivanishvili and Credit Suisse.

654 members of the European Parliament took part in the vote on the Georgian resolution. The document was supported by 495 votes, 73 voted against and 86 abstained.

Former head of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili He described the EP resolution as “shameful and disgusting”.
