With “The Wild Robot,” DreamWorks puts nature to the test

THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – MUST SEE

Since its creation in 1994, the DreamWorks animation studio has set itself the goal of making school comedies, in line with the times and reproducible at will (the franchises chicken race, shrek, Madagascar, kung-fu-panda…). In contrast to the elegance of Pixar, the aesthetically unrefined Dreamworks products multiply jokes, jokes and second-rate jokes, dropping witticisms and winks. “We make films for adults and the adult in every child”said producer and co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, Worldin 2008. But by adapting wild robot (Gallimard, 2016) Peter Brown’s illustrated bestseller for children ages 7 to 8, the study gets rid of some of its tics of humor and irony and ventures further into the paths of melodrama.

Here is Rozzum unit 7 134, also known as Roz. Survivor of a plane crash, this service robot lands on a wild island where all kinds of animals from the forests, lakes and seas live… Among wild boars and geese, he quickly understands that his abilities, intended to help humans in their day by day the tasks are of little use to you… “Do you need help?” »he asks a crustacean, a few seconds before a seagull devours it. That being said, what’s the point of sticking QR codes on the backs of groundhogs if not to scare them?

learning story

As Roz does her best to keep an egg from breaking, she comes face to face with a gosling she nicknames “Joli Bec.” Eye to eye (more like eyes to lenses), these two come together and the ecological fable becomes a moving story of motherhood and learning.. Starting from the principle that animal instincts resemble computer programs, the film plays with a twist on mimicry and champions the cause of the emotional machine, taking inspiration from Roy Batty in sword hunter either e-wall.

Against the cute representation of animals, which comes from a strong inclination for playful anthropomorphism, in line with previous DreamWorks productions, Roz appears as a poetic and breathless being, whose survival depends on her capacity to love. With its two spheres, its four limbs and its retractable tools, it evokes the great droid classics (the soldiers of the castle in the skyfrom Studio Ghibli, The iron giantby the American Brad Bird, and even more recently My robot friendby the Spanish Pablo Berger).
