Six tons of drugs destroyed in Helmand, Afghanistan, in six months

In Afghanistan’s Helmand province, authorities have seized and destroyed more than six tons of drugs over the past six months. Among them were 400 kg of heroin, 452 kg of methamphetamine and 537 kg of opium, clarifies the Anti-Narcotics Department of the regional police.

Additionally, during this time, 281 people were arrested in connection with drug possession and sales. Several Helmand residents have called on the police to seriously combat drugs and pursue drug traffickers.

An operation is currently underway to clear poppy fields in the city of Lashkar Gah and all districts of the province.

It should be noted that the Helmand fields were once one of the main resources for opium producers, but after a blanket drug ban by the Taliban,* Poppy plantations in the province were almost completely destroyed.
