Why the Assembly office takes the Aurore Bergé case to court

The sky is darkening for Aurore Bergé. By ten votes against nine, the National Assembly, its highest collegiate authority, decided, on Wednesday, October 9, to send to justice a “processing request” for “false testimony” against the Renaissance des Yvelines deputy, a crime punishable by five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros. The request comes from deputies of La Francia Insumisa (LFI) and environmentalists from the office, where the left is the majority.

Who briefly held the position of Minister of Families, from July 2023 to January 2024, is suspected of having lied before a parliamentary commission of inquiry into the economic model of daycare centers and the quality of care for young children. During a hearing on April 30, Mme Bergé assured, under oath, that he had no “personal, intimate or friendly connection, or acquaintances” with the general delegate of the French Federation of Daycare Companies (FFEC), Elsa Hervy.

This is far from the story told by journalist Víctor Castanet in his book investigation The ogres (Flammarion), published on September 18, focusing on the abuses of private daycare centers and, in particular, the People & Baby group. In a chapter titled “Aurore Bergé, Minister of… Communications”, the journalist, at the origin of the revelations about the Orpea scandal, denounces “a kind of non-aggression pact to preserve the image of the government and private actors” during the publication of two previous works on the early childhood sector, in September 2023. It demonstrates that the proximity between the minister and the FFEC spokesperson has allowed, on the one hand, that the actors in the sector do not question, on this occasion, the government’s early childhood policy, but also that “language elements in co-construction” with private actors passed into the hands of Aurore Bergé.
