Atlético appeals the partial closure of the Metropolitano after the derby incidents: “The sanction is disproportionate”

Atlético de Madrid announced in a statement that they are appealing the sanction imposed by the Competition Committee to close the southern end of the Metropolitano for three matches following incidents during the derby against Real Madrid. The club understands that the sanction is “disproportionate” and that “the biggest loser is Atlético”.

“Atlético de Madrid reiterates its condemnation of the incidents that occurred during the match against Real Madrid. Our club maintains a policy of zero tolerance towards violence, prosecuting any demonstration of this nature and applying the sanctions provided for in our regulations interior to those involved.

“Our collaboration with the authorities is ongoing and, in the case in question, we worked with the Police from the outset to identify the people involved, three of whom have already been permanently expelled as partners of the club. Our security service continues to collaborate with the police in the identification of the rest of the people involved in the throwing of objects, who will also be definitively expelled as soon as they are located.

“On the other hand, and once analyzed the resolution of the Competition Commission of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, in which the partial closure of the lower southern part (sectors 127 to 133) of our stadium is decided for three matches , we consider the sanction to be disproportionate, which harms a large number of supporters who had nothing to do with what happened and who demonstrated exemplary behavior.

“We believe that the unacceptable behavior of a few cannot result in such an excessive sanction against a large majority who have committed no fault. The biggest loser of everything that has happened is Atlético Madrid and its supporters, and those responsible for this are the people involved in throwing objects, who must be punished and not the rest of the supporters, who have amply demonstrated their good behavior, for this reason we consider it appropriate to. appeal this sanction to the Appeals Commission.
