Telegram founder Pavel Durov’s statement that the messenger will be able to reveal users’ IP addresses and phone numbers at the reasonable request of law enforcement officials is an important step forward. French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about this in an interview with the weekly Variety.
In fact, Macron made it clear that Durov could be released.
“Justice will take its course without interference, but I note that (Telegram. – EADaily) the founder announced that he has updated the platform’s terms of service and privacy policy to ensure compliance with the basic rules of public order on the platform. In particular, he stated that he is willing to cooperate with authorities in case of illegal activity on the platform, which is an important step forward. With every revolution comes a period of adaptation. This episode showed us that when it comes to big digital players, nothing is inevitable and that citizens and their governments are capable of setting the rules and enforcing them.” – said the French president.
He noted that Durov’s arrest was not a political decision.
“There was no political decision behind this arrest, but only the actions of our justice system in response to the violations of the law it observed… Digital actors have a responsibility to cooperate in the fight against all illegal activities in Internet, and Our justice system has the authority to act in rape cases,” Macron said.
This is exactly what happened when Durov was detained in France on August 24 for lack of cooperation, he emphasized.
