The deputy for Isère, Hugo Prevost, accused of sexual violence, announced his resignation on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 9. “I understand the seriousness of the accusations made against me. I defended myself. I won’t answer it publicly. (…). Taking note of the decision of the La France insoumise-Frente Nuevo Popular group, I announce today the resignation of my mandate.”he wrote in a press release published on X.
The parliamentary group La Francia Insumisa (LFI) explained on Tuesday that it had excluded the deputy for acts of a sexual nature. The environmentalists and the Socialist Party (PS) of Isère, as well as their deputy, called on Wednesday for the resignation of the LFI deputy.
The “rebel” group specified, in a statement, that it had been contacted at the end of September 2024 by the Monitoring Committee against Sexist and Sexist Violence (CVSS) of LFI. “about serious acts of a sexual nature that may constitute previous criminal offenses” in the election of the deputy. This 25-year-old former union student was elected for the first time in July 2024 against former Macronist minister Olivier Véran, in a tight triangular election in which a candidate from the National Rally also participated.
Numerous calls for resignation
“At the time of presenting my candidacy to the New Popular Front in the first constituency of Isère, and during the election of the first and [du] second round, I was not aware of the existence of the accusations that now come to my attention”Hugo Prevost details in his press release. Upon arriving at the National Assembly, he was part of the finance, general economy and budget control commission.
The LFI group’s announcement on Wednesday sparked numerous reactions and calls for resignation in Isère. Prevost vice president Salomé Robin stated in a press release: “horrified and disgusted by these revelations”sharing your “Support for victims.”
“Without having absolutely anything to do with Hugo Prevost, I inform you that I am leaving my position as substitute deputy”he added. Olivier Véran, for his part, demanded a “investigation”.
For its part, the Grenoble prosecutor’s office announced on Wednesday that it had not received “there is no trace of a complaint” regarding the deputy.
