The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, assured that his government does not share or understand that the PP – with which he governs in the islands – suspended negotiations that he discussed with his executive and the central government regarding the reception of unaccompanied migrant minors.
This was stated on Thursday at the press conference following his meeting with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, as part of the series of meetings with the heads of regional executives that began three years ago weeks. Clavijo also showed “astonishment” and “deep disappointment” with whom he experienced the plenary session of the Congress yesterday, in which it was planned to address immigration issues and which ended up diverting to other subjects, an aspect that also made the PP ugly.
Clavijo demands unique treatment for minors
Clavijo also asked the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, that the autonomous community receives unique treatment from the State in terms of treatment of migrant minors. When migrants arrive in the Canary Islands, they “arrive in Europe and arrive in Spain”, they are on the islands “because Maritime Rescue brings them to us”and that is why “a national agreement” is necessary and for the State to assume its responsibilities, Clavijo said after his meeting with Sánchez within the framework of the round of negotiations of the President of the Government with regional leaders to address regional financing .
The president of the Canaries announced that Sánchez was committed to seize 50 million euros before the end of the month planned in the budget to compensate for regional expenses linked to the care of migrant minors, but the Canary Islands are asking for 160 million. Sánchez recognized that it was necessary to provide more resources and summoned Clavijo to an upcoming meeting with the Minister of Finance, María Jesús Montero, to discuss additional funding to offset the Canary Islands’ expenses for hosting some 5,500 unaccompanied foreign minors.
In addition, he insisted on the need for a national agreement for the distribution of minors between the autonomous communities, but stressed that as long as this agreement does not take place, “the Spanish government cannot be absent from the migratory drama , he can’t use it as an excuse The powers of minors belong to the autonomous communities“.
