Hurricane “Milton”, which hit the US state of Florida, will drain water from Tampa Bay.

A rare natural phenomenon occurred in Tampa Bay, which scientists call “reverse storm surge.” The hurricane temporarily drained all the water from the bay, as a result of which the water bottom was revealed and the sea water level in the Beyshore Boulevard area decreased significantly.
According to Peter Stempel, associate professor of landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, a “reverse storm surge” occurs when strong winds “squeeze” water out of coastal bays.
Florida Department of Emergency Management officials have urged local residents to stay away from the open bottom of the bay because the water could return soon.
It should be noted that a similar event occurred during Hurricane “Ian” in 2022. As a result, the water “left” the bay for several hours and then suddenly “returned.”
