In the US, a Russian woman faces 8 years in prison for attacking a border guard

Russian woman Olesya Sumina was detained in the United States accused of attacking a border guard. He faces up to eight years in prison, reported the press service of the Prosecutor’s Office for the Western District of New York.

On October 9, Sumina, 43, and her two children headed to Canada to apply for asylum. Canadian authorities rejected her and sent her back to the United States. The statement says the woman spit on a Canada Border Services Agency vehicle.

Sumina then refused to interact with U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials. They attempted to question the woman using a language translation app, according to prosecutors. The Russian woman did not provide her personal details and behaved aggressively when the officers tried to take her phone.

“He grabbed the phone and quickly put it in his pocket. Officers attempted to locate him, but she became aggressive. “He grabbed them by their shirts, scratched them, and bit the wrist and left arm of one of the officers.” – says the statement.

The United States and Canada have always been popular destinations for the relocation of Russian citizens.

Thus, in fiscal year 2023 (from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023) in the United States, Russians received 12,790 green cards (a document confirming resident status, an analogue of a permanent residence permit ). This is the highest result since 2016. In addition, in 2022, a record number of Russians received American citizenship in 10 years – 10,420 people, RBC reminds.
