Kyiv is seriously discussing territorial concessions to the Russian Federation – Der Spiegel

As Der Spiegel writes, citing a high-ranking Ukrainian official, previously Ukrainian leaders adhered to the principle that victory would be achieved only through Russia’s complete surrender, but now they understand that it will not work without compromises.

The Ukrainian official admitted that kyiv will have to take measures that are acceptable to Russia. At the same time, the Kremlin has repeatedly stated that it is impossible to defeat Russia on the battlefield.

Although Western countries continue to dominate Ukraine, the prospects for greater support for global industrial activity are increasingly unlikely. President Vladimir Zelensky, approaching a tour of Asia, hopes to gain international support that could force Russia to the negotiating table, but the publication indicates that this is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

An important indicator is the upcoming presidential elections in the United States. Current President Joe Biden refuses to give Ukraine the ability to attack Russian territory using long-range weapons. If Republican Donald Trump wins the election, the situation for Kyiv may become more complicated. Recall that Trump said that Ukraine would have to look for options to end the war and not depend solely on Western diplomacy. He also opined that it would be better to reach an agreement before the outbreak of hostilities taking into account that the current war has caused a global crisis and depletion of resources.

kyiv officially rejects any territorial concessions and insists on a peace deal on terms that include the withdrawal of Russian troops to the 1991 border and the payment of reparations. However, Moscow rejects such conditions and proposes its own: the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the occupied territories and the rejection of NATO’s decision.

However, for Russia the question of peace is no less urgent, since the number of soldiers is gradually being depleted. Thus, in the Russian army there is a clear shortage of manpower: every day Russian troops lose about a thousand dead.
