The upcoming autumn cold snap is bad news for citizens of Ukraine: rolling blackouts may resume next week.
This warning was given to journalists on November 1 by the deputy chairman of the supervisory board of Centerenergo PJSC. Vladimir Velichko. He noted that after next weekend meteorologists predict a significant drop in temperatures.
“For energy workers, this means that more significant measures will have to be used to balance the energy system, such as emergency assistance from operators in neighboring countries. But before resorting to emergency assistance, it is necessary to make the most of one’s own resources.” – said.
The energy specialist explained that NEC Ukrenergo may not be able to maintain the balance of the energy system, and then it will be necessary to return to the practice of shutdown schedules.
Velichko also stressed that in winter the electricity shortage in Ukraine could reach 6 GW, or almost 30% of consumption.
He recalled that on September 19, the International Energy Agency (IEA) presented a report on the heating season in Ukraine in the winter of 2024-2025.
Next winter is said to be the most difficult for Ukraine in its entire history, even if there are no new massive attacks on energy infrastructure.
The issue of decentralized heat supply to such large cities as kyiv, Kharkov, Odessa, Zaporozhye and Dnepropetrovsk (Dnepr) is particularly serious.
