Shamil Ayrim: “Holding parliamentary elections for the first time in the liberated territories is a historic event”

Head of the Turkey-Azerbaijan interparliamentary friendship group Shamil Ayrim, an observer at polling station No. 10 of electoral district No. 7, answered questions from the “Report” on the election results and other issues.

– As an observer, what can you say about the extraordinary parliamentary elections held in Azerbaijan?

– The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are taking place in full compliance with democratic standards. All the necessary conditions for transparency of the elections have been provided. The cameras in the hall provide objectivity. Everything is fine. I have to say what I saw as an observer. What I saw leaves me with a very good impression.

– This year, for the first time, parliamentary elections are being held in the liberated areas. How do you assess this historic event?

– As you said, this is a historic event. Karabakh has been under occupation for more than 30 years. But now it is free. All subsequent elections will be held throughout Azerbaijan.

– What are your expectations for the new parliament to be formed in Azerbaijan?

– In fact, this is an issue that is of interest not only to Azerbaijan, but also to Turkey. Because the two countries take joint steps in foreign policy. Parliamentarians have a role in the implementation of foreign policy. Therefore, I hope that worthy candidates will be elected who will contribute to statehood and the direction of foreign policy.

– How do you assess the recent developments in the South Caucasus?

– Azerbaijan is the bright star of the region. After the 44-day Second Karabakh War and one-day anti-terrorist measures, a new reality has emerged in the region. Peace is on Azerbaijan’s agenda. The main condition for this is the amendment of the Armenian Constitution and the dissolution of the Minsk Group. In my opinion, Iran should take the hand of peace extended to it by Baku.
