Renfe will save around 30 million per year thanks to the new punctuality commitment

Renfe’s new punctuality commitment after the change in conditions will save it almost 30 million euros per year, after spending 42 million euros for this concept in 2023.

Since July 1, Renfe reimburses the total amount of the Ave, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed and Intercity ticket when the delay exceeds 90 minutes (30 minutes until then), and 50% in case of delay greater than 60 minutes (15 minutes before).

In 2023, these delays cost Renfe 42 million euros, a figure that would have been 12.5 million if only mandatory compensation had been applied, as EFE learned from sources close to the company.

With the new compensation, the public company places the commitment to punctuality on the same level as the rest of high-speed competitors (Ouigo and Iryo).

Until now, Renfe had more advantageous reimbursement conditions, established in 1992, with the introduction of broadband in Spain, between Madrid and Seville.

Maintaining the previous remuneration policy penalized Renfe much more than the rest of the operators.s, in a regime of strong competition like the current one, support Renfe and the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente.

This week, Congress approved a non-legal proposal presented by the PP, with votes against the PSOE, for Renfe to restore the previous compensation amounts, although the real effect of a legal proposal is zero.
