Poland plans to suspend the right to asylum because “Putin, Lukashenko and the mafias are using it illegally”

Poland’s projects temporarily suspend the right to asylum as part of a strategy aimed at limiting illegal immigration in full swing tensions with Belaruswhich Warsaw accuses of channeling migrants across its border.

Tusk claimed that the right to asylum was used by Belarusian President Alexander LukashenkoRussian President Vladimir Putin and by human traffickers in a way that goes against the essence of the right to asylum.

“One of the elements of immigration strategy will be the temporary territorial suspension of the right to asylum,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on Saturday.

“I will demand it, I will demand recognition of this decision in Europe“, he declared during a conference organized by his liberal civic coalition (KO), the main party in the Polish government coalition.

The migration took place the agenda in Poland from 2021when large numbers of people, mainly from the Middle East and Africa, began attempting to illegally cross the border with Belarus, in what Warsaw and the European Union called a crisis orchestrated by Minsk and its ally Russia.

Strategic Immigration Plan

Tusk said he would present immigration strategy at government meeting October 15first anniversary of the elections that brought the ruling coalition to power.

Since taking office in December 2023Tusk pursued a tough policy on immigration, a strategy that won broad public support but disappointed activists who hoped he would abandon the approach of the previous nationalist administration.

“This violates the Constitution”

Marysia Zlonkiewicz of Grupa Granica, a NGO that helps migrants at the bordersaid suspending asylum went against the constitution and would put migrants in the hands of human traffickers.

“Prime Minister Tusk He violates the Constitution he promised to defend… We cannot selectively exclude or deprive people of their constitutional rights,” he said.
