The Coastal Maritime Prevention and Cleaning Service of the Government’s Department of the Sea and Water Cycle collected this last September approximately five tons of waste from the coasts of the Balearic Islands.
In a press release, the Department of the Sea and Water Cycle of the Balearic Government informed that during the month of September the Maritime Prevention and Cleaning Service removed a total of 4,905.78 kilos of waste from the Balearic coasts, with a daily average of 163.53 kilos. Mallorca once again leads the collection with 2,396.15 kilos (79.87 kilos per day), followed by Menorca with 1,095.65 kilos (36.52 kilos per day), Ibiza with 1,005 .55 kilos (33.52 kilos per day) and Formentera with 408.43 kilos (13.61 kilos). kilos per day).
The campaign was carried out with boats of type of beachintended for shallow waters, and for ships coastal typewho operate in more remote areas. In total, those on the beach collected 2,739.98 kilos (91.33 kilos per day), while those on the coast collected 2,165.80 (72.19 kilos per day).
During this period, we observed little presence of jellyfish in the bathing areas, with no trace of a Portuguese warship. Concerning waste, the plastic was the most common, accounting for 48.78 percent of the total, followed by wood with 27.88 percent. In addition, exceptional collections of plastic objects, logs, pipes and parts of boats were carried out. The Ministry responded to three alerts, two of which were handled jointly with the 112 emergency service and Maritime Rescue, while another was reported by institutions and individuals.
This month concludes the 2024 campaign of the Balearic Coastal Cleaning Service, active from May 1 to September 30, with daily operations from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., ensuring the maintenance and conservation of the coasts of the archipelago during the period . busiest season.
