The old schools of Guitiriz are reborn as social housing for migrants

Thousands of Asturians and Galicians who emigrated to America sent money back to their home countries to take care of their loved ones and build schools for your children. These classrooms became the place where generations of children learned to read and write, giving many a path to a better future.

Decades later, these same schools They continue to play a fundamental role in the social fabric of Guitiriz, in the province of Lugo, although with a different objective. The Town Hall transformed these buildings into social housing who today offer refuge to migrants who come looking for new opportunities.

“We tried to provide this solution,” explains Marisol Morandeira, mayor of Guitiriz, who highlights the social approach that guided this rehabilitation project. The rooms, which once housed desks and blackboards, are now temporary residences where families in vulnerable situations are welcomeproviding them with a safe space while they settle in.

This rehabilitation plan not only represents a new opportunity for those who need it most, but also allows us to promote rural heritage which otherwise could have been lost in time. The buildings, which were once the cradle of knowledge for generations of Galicians, are today a symbol of welcome and integration for those seeking to build a new life in Spain.
