Dr. Yehoshua Kaliski, senior researcher at INSS, shared the conclusions that can be drawn from Hezbollah’s latest rocket attacks.

When asked what became evident during these attacks, he noted that the missile launches were not as effective as Hezbollah itself claimed. In his opinion, most of the missiles fired were inaccurate, but this does not matter for interception systems, since they must respond to any threat, regardless of the accuracy of the missiles.
Dr. Kaliski emphasized the importance of distinguishing between long- and medium-range missiles, as well as short-range missiles and other weapons. According to him, Israeli defense systems cope quite effectively with medium- and long-range ballistic missiles. However, problems arise when intercepting short-range missiles, which air defense systems such as Iron Dome cannot handle at the required level. The reason is that these systems were not originally designed to combat targets of this type, which reach their target in just a few seconds.
Kaliski also said that in the future the introduction of a laser system is expected, which should significantly increase the effectiveness of defense against short-range missiles. This system is expected to come into operation in the coming years, which will solve most of the current problems.
Furthermore, the expert explained that Hezbollah’s massive missile salvos are aimed at overloading air defense systems. The more missiles launched simultaneously, the more difficult it will be for the system to quickly and accurately calculate the ballistic trajectory of each threat. The enemy’s goal is to create such a load that the system is forced to choose which missiles to intercept and which can land in less dangerous areas.
According to Kaliski, Hezbollah is using sequential salvo tactics, seeking to enhance its attacks based on early interceptions. However, he expressed confidence that Israeli specialists are sufficiently trained to adapt air defense systems to such threats.
