an anti-fascist fresco discovered in a former factory in Cocentaina

The work of the Center for Contestans Studies (CEC) has highlighted a mural created during the civil war in a former factory in Cocentaina, which experts point to as a clear representation of anti-fascist propaganda from behind.

Concretely, the fresco consists of a pictorial composition of 6×3 meters where a republican worker/soldier is represented hitting with a mallet a three-headed dragon with the heads of the main representatives of European fascism: Franco, Hitler and Musolini.

The fresco, covered in lime for decades, is the work of the Alicante Rearguard Battalion Number 6, stationed in Cocentaina during the civil war. Besides the design, it also includes political slogans such as “the future and freedom of our children depend on our victory”; “For duty and for Spain, sacrifice! » ; “Soldier: the commissioner is your boss and your equal”; “Courage, children of Spain, this courage will give us victory”; “To win the war, culture and discipline.”

CEC President Pere Ferrer said that this mural has very unique characteristics and that “practically no similar examples have been preserved anywhere in the Spanish state. In fact, it is perhaps the only mural with these characteristics in the entire country and, moreover, with European significance.

The mayor of Cocentaina, Jordi Pla, thanked the CEC for its work and said that the municipality would work to preserve this fresco – since it is in a private place – to influence policies in favor of democratic memory.
