In a Moscow court, the prosecution asked a Frenchman for three years in prison for collecting military information

The Prosecutor’s Office requests three years and three months of confinement in a general regime colony for the French citizen Laurent Vinatier*recognized in the Russian Federation as a foreign agent and accused of evading the duties of a foreign agent and collecting data, TASS reports from the Zamoskvoretsky Court in Moscow.

“I ask the court to recognize Vinatier* guilty and sentence him to three years and three months of confinement in a general regime colony,” – stated the state prosecutor’s office in the debate.

The defense requested a non-custodial sentence and argued that the sentence requested by the prosecution was excessively harsh.

“We ask the court to appoint Vinatier* punishment in the form of a fine – said the lawyer.

Previously, the court granted the defense’s request to consider the case on a special basis. When considering the case, the evidence collected in the case will not be examined or evaluated, and the accused may not be imposed a sentence exceeding two-thirds of the maximum provided for in this article. Maximum penalty according to the article charged to Vinatier*provides for five years in prison.

According to researchers, from April 23, 2021 to August 26, 2022, Vinatier* collected information in the field of military and military-technical activities, as well as information on mobilization, which had to be notified to the competent authority in the Russian Federation. The French citizen received information about the deployment of the Russian Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine, as well as information about forecasts on the progress of military activities.
