European football leagues denounce FIFA for calendar: “We play too much”

European football leagues, including the Spanish one, denounced FIFA before the European Commission in Brussels for “abusing its dominant position in community football” when establishing football schedules.

“The complaint explains how the imposition of decisions on the international calendar by FIFA constitutes an abuse of a dominant position and violates European Union law. Recent case law (…) clearly shows that FIFA must exercise its functions in a transparent, objective, non-discriminatory and proportionate manner to neutralize their conflict of interest,” the lawsuit states.

The director of international relations of the Premier League, Mathieu Moreuil, denounced “there are no more days on the calendar.”

“We are reaching a critical point. The players tell us that we play too much football and that there is constant expansion. The Premier League has not changed its shape. What has changed in recent decades is the way international and regional football competitions take place,” denounced the president of the Premier League.
