How does waiting for the end of the world affect people?

People’s opinions about the Apocalypse have changed, but faith in defense mechanisms against it is not strong enough to overcome centuries-old fears.

Columnist Howard Chua-Eoan writes about this in a column for Bloomberg.

How do these fears affect your work?

A survey conducted late last year among workers in seven countries showed interesting results: 46% of Generation Z and 38% of millennials admitted that the news worries them so much that it even interferes with work tasks. Your anxiety level has probably increased even more lately.

And in September 2023, Edelman conducted a survey against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the worsening situation in the Middle East, raising fears of an escalation of the conflict, including the threat of nuclear war in Europe.

Although the percentage of people affected was lower among older workers, this does not mean that no one is more protected from the Apocalypse.

“When Russia started hostilities in Ukraine in February 2022, I immediately ordered potassium iodide to protect against radioactive radiation and kept it in my office and bag, and I am happy to share it,” Chua-Yeoan said.

He also summarized that we use various methods to combat anxiety, including dark humor. And I remembered a friend who survived Hurricane Helen and started watching “Apocalypse porn,” for example, the series “How the World Ends,” which has been airing since 2017.

Recall that Cursor wrote that research carried out by the great scientist Isaac Newton suggests that the end of the world could come as early as 2060. Despite his revolutionary discoveries in physics and mathematics, Newton was a deeply religious man and believed in the possibility of predicting the future through the study of biblical texts.

According to their calculations, based on careful analysis of religious prophecies, our world in its current form will cease to exist in the middle of the 21st century. In his works, Newton argued that the Second Coming of Christ should take place precisely during this period, and after it the “Kingdom of Heaven” would be established on Earth. He also believed that the Jewish people would play a key role in this process by establishing an “eternal and prosperous kingdom” in Israel.
