Iberdrola reports that the installation of the 50 turbines of the 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm has been successfully completed, a project which is part of the strategic agreement between Iberdrola and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company – Masdar.
When fully operational, Baltic Eagle, already connected to the grid, will provide renewable energy to around 475,000 families and reduce C02 emissions by around 800,000 tonnes per year.
Each of the 50 wind turbines has a unit capacity of 9.53 MW and was supplied by Vestas and installed by shipping company Fred Olsen Windcarrier.
The Baltic hub of Iberdrola
Baltic Eagle is the second of Iberdrola’s three large wind farms in Germany, with Wikinger (350 MW, in operation) and Windanker (315 MW, in planning). Together, these offshore wind farms form the Iberdrola Baltic Hub. Baltic Eagle is Masdar’s first project with Iberdrola, the first in Germany and the one that provided the largest financing to the company.
“The completion of the installation of the Baltic Eagle wind farm turbines is a significant milestone in a record year for Iberdrola’s offshore wind business. With this project, Iberdrola is on track to reach 5,000 MW of offshore wind capacity globally by the end of 2026,” he said. Ignacio Galanpresident of Iberdrola.
“Once fully operational, Baltic Eagle, the second offshore wind farm in the Baltic Hub complex, will make an important contribution to Germany’s energy transition, providing clean energy to almost half a million homes, while reducing CO₂ emissions,” he added.
Historical milestone
The President highlighted that “this historic milestone was achieved thanks to the strong relationship with Masdar, which shares our vision of leveraging offshore wind energy to accelerate energy independence in Europe. This was also possible thanks to the experience and tireless commitment of the human team who worked on the project”
His Excellency Sultan Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technologies of the UAE, Chairman of Masdar and President of COP28, said that “the installation of the last turbine of the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm marks an exciting milestone “.
Al Jaber also noted that “if the project progresses as planned, Baltic Eagle will provide clean, renewable energy to 475,000 German homes. “This achievement also strengthens Masdar’s partnership with Iberdrola, leading to a significant expansion of our offshore wind portfolio and advancing the global energy transition.
COP28 agreement
“Our collaboration, accentuated by the 15 billion euro agreement signed at COP28 in the United Arab Emirates, reaffirms our common commitment to help triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030,” concluded the Sultan .
Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, said: “Today’s announcement is an important milestone in the progress of Baltic Eagle, the project that launched our partnership with Iberdrola in July last year and has brings together two leading companies in the field of clean energy.
“Offshore wind energy is a vital technology for the energy transition and Masdar hopes the relationship with Iberdrola will enable more transformative projects, supporting the journey to zero emissions in Europe,” said Al Ramahi.
Flagship piece in Germany
In 2026, the Baltic Hub will have a total capacity of more than 1,100 MW and will generate investments of around 3.7 billion euros. The Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm is an important part of Iberdrola’s growth strategy in Germany. Iberdrola works with key players in the German economy to help them achieve their climate goals.
A key element in this regard is the strategic partnership between Iberdrola and Masdar. The two companies signed an alliance to jointly invest in Baltic Eagle in July 2023.
15 billion deal
At COP28, they announced an additional €15 billion deal to explore the joint development of offshore wind and green hydrogen projects in key markets including Germany, the UK and the US .
Masdar has a long-term commitment to advancing offshore wind projects around the world. It aims to achieve a 100 GW renewable energy portfolio by 2030 to triple global renewable energy capacity by the end of this decade.
