Sixteen federations denounce the increase in taxes on electricity

Sixteen federations and professional associations denounced the increase in taxes on electricity bills, provided for in the draft budget presented by the Government, in an open letter addressed to deputies and senators on Wednesday.

“This tax, which already represents almost a third of the total amount of the electricity bill, could constitute the first item tomorrow, which would lead to electricity consumers contributing more to the State budget than ‘to the goods and services they consume’ .these federations of the energy sector write in this letter, on the occasion of the beginning of the examination of the finance bill (PLF) 2025 in the finance commission of the National Assembly.

“In recent months, the electricity bill has regularly been at the center of the news, effectively devaluing the assets of the French electricity system and its stakeholders.”they continue, remembering that electricity “It constitutes one of the pillars of France’s energy strategy to guarantee our sovereignty, our climate trajectory and respond to the challenges of purchasing power and competitiveness”.

They emphasize that the year 2024 marked the end of the price shield with an increase in the special tax on electricity, which went for households from 1 euro without taxes (HT) to 21 euros without taxes per megawatt hour (MWh) on February 1 of 2024.

However, they made it known, “The finance bill for 2025 presented last week finally foresees that the excise tax rate could be between 30 euros/MWh without taxes and 50 euros/MWh without taxes, thus far exceeding the previous crisis level”. “The project presented by the government aims to carry out a global increase in the special tax on electricity to a level never achieved until now, which would constitute an ecological contradiction”they say.

At the same time, fossil fuels “They still represent two thirds of our national final energy consumption and weigh heavily on our trade balance, with energy imports amounting to more than 65 billion euros each year”they lament.

The signatories are Afpac, Avere, Enerplan, Gifam, Gifen, Gimelec, France Hydro Electricité, France Hydrogène, the French Federation of Electrical Integrators (FFIE), the Federation of Electrical, Electronic and Communications Industries (Fieec), France Renewables, Ignes, Promotelec, the Union of Renewable Energies (SER), the French Nuclear Energy Society (SFEN) and the French Electricity Union (UFE).
