The Viña Rock music festival published this Monday a preview of the poster for its next edition, which will take place from May 1 to 3, 2025. The announcement was immediately noticed on social networks due to the almost total absence of women among artists. which appear on the provisional poster. In fact, of the 35 artists who make up the preview published by the festival, there is only one woman.
The poster, even if there are still artists to be confirmed, headlines rock groups made up of men like Mägo de Oz, La Raíz or Talco. Other groups like La Sra have confused some users on social media, thinking they would be made up of women; However, its members are six men. And also irony, as in the case of Eme Dj: “Thank God there is a lady. » The only female and solo artist on the bill is Grex.
“Campo de nabos”, “viñanabos”, “testosterona rock”, “viñaseñoros” or “viñamujers” are some of the nicknames that the festival in X received in response to the announcement of the poster. The festival has not responded to online criticism.
Another user, journalist Antonio de la Lama Girón, pointed out that “in the illustration of the poster there are approximately 93 people, 57% of which are female characters, including the band that plays. 0% women appear in the group list.
This announcement sparked a debate on social networks that has for years surrounded the artistic choice of dozens of festivals in Spain. “We have been living in the same situation for over 15 years and nothing is getting better. “We are fed up,” says singer and activist Rocío Saiz, one of those who made it visible, in conversation with elDiario.es.
This media analyzed last summer “the problem” of festivals with women: two out of three artists (musicians and soloists included) who occupy their stages are men. To produce this x-ray, elDiario.es studied the 2014 posters of the 10 events that brought together the largest number of participants the previous year.
Viña Rock’s accounts concluded that 67% of the names on the bill were men’s groups, to which should be added 24% solo men. 4.8% came from mixed groups, compared to 3.6% from female soloists and a tiny 1.2% from female groups.
“The history of rock and roll has been that for decades the big stars are mostly men,” explained a similar festival, Resurrection Fest, whose lineup provided the least equal data in the analysis .
Rocío Saiz complains that it is “always the same people” who take a stand and that he misses the men “who take a stand on the subject”. Furthermore, she points out that balance is lacking not only in the absence of women, but also non-binary and diverse people. “If it’s always us who position ourselves, it puts us in even more vulnerable positions and causes us to lose jobs,” says Saiz.
