The Argentine opposition intends to dismiss the head of the Foreign Ministry for the Malvinas

A group of opposition deputies began an impeachment process against Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino for agreements with Great Britain over the Malvinas Islands, said Eduardo Toniolli, a deputy for the Unión por la Patria party.

“We are launching a political trial against Mondino. Since taking office, the minister has served British interests in the South Atlantic. The last straw was the bilateral agreements with unacceptable concessions to the usurpers of our Malvinas Islands,” – wrote in X.

At the end of September, Argentina and Great Britain reached agreements to improve air connections with the islands and on fishing issues, which caused discontent among veterans of the Falklands War. Co-founder of the center for former island combatants of La Plata (Cecim) ernesto alonso informed RIA Novosti that the center filed a lawsuit against the president JavierMiley and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for these agreements. According to Cecim, this agreement goes against the interests of Argentina.

According to Toniolli, the agreements concluded by Mondino allowed Great Britain to improve logistics and expand the extraction of natural resources belonging to Argentina. Furthermore, these agreements were not approved by Congress.

The current government of Argentina has been repeatedly criticized by citizens and public organizations for its policy towards the Falkland Islands.

There is a long-standing dispute between the Argentine and British governments over sovereignty over the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands. In 1982 a war broke out between both countries, which lasted several weeks and ended with the defeat of Buenos Aires. In 2013, a referendum was held on the islands, as a result of which an overwhelming number of local residents voted in favor of maintaining the status of a British overseas territory. The Argentine government then stated that the result of the referendum would not affect Argentina’s territorial claims to these islands.
