North Korea on Thursday confirmed some details of its recent constitutional amendment, where it defined the South as a “hostile state”, in the first amendment to its Magna Carta that eliminates references to possible reunification.

Last week, North Korea concluded a major parliamentary session in which it was expected to amend its constitution, but then revealed no details about the changes, although it said the vote was unanimous.
The amendment was already expected to remove references to reunification with the South and redefine national borders, as ordered by the country’s leader, Kim Jong-un.
Kim urged considering the South – with which relations have been non-existent for the past five years – as the main national enemy, eliminating clauses related to reunification and clarifying the country’s territorial boundaries, including the border controversial western maritime.
Experts believe that Kim’s desire to formalize the existence of two clearly differentiated states on the peninsula and to unilaterally define the northern borders is a symptom of the terrible atmosphere in the region.
Pyongyang’s constitutional amendment comes amid renewed tensions with Seoul, after the Second Army fired shots south of the border with the North on Tuesday in response to detonations it used to destroy sections of roads on its territory that connect it. both countries.
