The Bar of the Parliament of Catalonia renounces Conguitos due to its “racist connotation”

The decision was not taken by the Catalan Chamber, but by the establishment itself after a comment from a user who saw a “racist connotation” in Conguitos. So the restaurant has decided to no longer replace the product.

Sources explained to laSexta that It is not a decision of Parliament and that no indication was given in this regard. Therefore, those responsible for the Equality Plan of the Catalan Chamber did not intervene in this decision and this was explained by those responsible for the catering service themselves.

The controversy surrounding this brand originated years ago, but reached its peak when a campaign on Change.org in 2020 demanded that this brand stop being used because “it is racist.” The promoter of this campaign explained that the “chocolate bars called Conguitos” they use “caricatures of ‘little Congolese’“with a skin color associated with chocolate that covers peanuts and completely disproportionate red lips.”

As he denounced, “the term Conguitos itself, as an illustration cartoon of a black man with large red lips make this snack a stigmatizing product for the black population.” As a result, many became aware of this and stopped using another brand, while others found it exaggerated to call it racist.
