City councils must increase cost by 150% from 2025

From 2025, all Spanish municipalities will be required by law to increase waste rates, a measure that aims to penalize citizens who generate more waste. This obligation arises from a European directive that requires member states to promote more efficient recycling and reduce the environmental impact of municipal solid waste. By measurement, this rate should increase by 150%, since currently citizens only pay around 40% of the total cost of the service.

He The Oviedo City Council was the first to apply the increasewith an increase of 80%, as announced by José Ramón Pando, councilor for basic services of the municipality. “We have failed to establish a rate for families in poverty,” Pando explained, referring to the lack of specific measures for the most vulnerable households.

The impact of the new rate will be noticeable all over the country. Antonio Garrido, representative of the Denia Vega del Guadalquivir community, announced that since 2023, in this region, the payment has already increased from 150 to 188 euros for additional management fees.

The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Rodríguez Almeida, criticized the measure, calling him a “sanchazo” and a “tax ax”. “It’s a huge waste,” he said, even though the reality is that the regulations are based on a European directive that requires Spain to meet its recycling and waste management targets. Despite these criticisms, the law will affect both landlords and tenants, who could see an increase in rent prices.
