How Israel sees the work of UN peacekeepers in Lebanon

Foreign Minister Israel Katz said Israel is committed to ensuring that the UN peacekeeping force (UNIFIL) continues its activities in southern Lebanon after the end of the war with Hezbollah terrorists.

This was reported by the Walla news portal.

Katz noted that Israel sees UNIFIL as an important element in the future structure of southern Lebanon “the day after tomorrow” after the war. In this regard, the IDF will take all measures not to cause harm to UNIFIL and its employees, and will also coordinate its actions with this organization in accordance with international law.

As previously reported, the UN peacekeeping contingent in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported that another peacekeeper was injured as a result of a shelling that occurred in the south of the country, near the border with Israel. UNIFIL representatives reported that the latest clashes between Israel and Hezbollah have caused serious damage to peacekeeper positions.

Previously, Cursor wrote that European Union countries participating in the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon declared that they have no intention of withdrawing their troops from the south of the country, despite calls from Israel about the need to do so. . Austria has about 160 soldiers in UNIFIL.

In total, European countries contribute about 3,600 soldiers to the 10,000-strong force.

Furthermore, Cursor has already reported that the situation with the attacks on the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as UNIFIL, is causing increasing tension between Israel, the UN and international partners. The European Union condemned the attacks against peacekeepers, highlighted the unacceptability of such actions, which violate international law, and called for an immediate end to such incidents.
